Saiin patisserie Kashishokunin crafts an enticing takeout lineup in Kyoto's Ukyo Ward, from a Tamba chestnut Mont Blanc layered with black bean cream over chestnut dacquoise to silky matcha truffles and light strawberry shortcake.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Inside the display cases at Kashishokunin in Kyoto's Saiin district, neatly finished pastries concentrate the natural flavors of their core ingredients. Among the standout favorites is the Tamba chestnut Mont Blanc, which layers an intensely rich chestnut purée over a pairing of smooth whipped cream and black soybean cream, all set atop an airy chestnut dacquoise base. Confections such as the seasonal autumn-and-winter Hitotsubu Matcha truffles and the dense baked matcha truffle cakes also draw praise, letting the mellow richness of fresh dairy melt into a deep, aromatic green tea profile.
Alongside these decadent creations, the shop’s everyday staples and celebration cakes leave an impression with their clean, restrained sweetness. Strawberry shortcakes and whole celebration cakes feature soft, light sponge paired with milky cream that never feels cloying, making them easy to enjoy across generations. The Chou Parisienne, filled with both smooth custard and fresh cream inside a crisp, fragrant choux shell, offers a straightforward way to appreciate the patisserie's dairy craftsmanship.
Beyond the refrigerated case, a generous selection of baked goods makes finding gifts straightforward, including buttery madeleines, bright lemon cakes, and crumbly cheese sablés crafted with multiple varieties of cheese. Kashishokunin operates strictly for takeout, with dedicated customer parking in front of the shop, making it convenient to pick up sweets for an afternoon tea or transport a special occasion cake back home.
